Voting for a judge that knows the correct conformation standard and
temperament
will always be the most important. Whether you can place under certain
judges
that you like should not be the reason to vote for them.

I do agree with this. And I think you should also think about what a judge
will do at our 100th show, and how they will conduct themselves in the
ring.

But, I do not agree that we are going to hell in a hand basket.

I can't wait to see the Maturity. I know about four or five of the regional
dog winners, and think they are fantastic. Every year I marvel at the
quality that comes from nine regions, and the verity of judges that find these

dogs. They are the best of the best. Every year it is the same. I
remember showing Big Ben at the National in the Maturity and going third to
R-Man. I was jazzed.

Then when I leave a National, I consider the Selects. Yes, there might be
one or two that didn't make it, but on balance, those who are picked are
indeed quality animals. We don't need to fix anything, we need to
understand how our breed has improved. We have made great strides, and
continue to
do so.

The lack of entry numbers isn't the problem. The smaller shows is not the
problem. The dogs being shown is not the problem. The honesty of judges is
not the problem. The ROMs, the AOEs, the Selects are not the problem.

The perception by some of us, is the problem.

The general public loves our breed. We are always in the top three in
numbers, (which might not be the best thing), and people are always looking to
buy a good German shepherd. The general perception of our breed couldn't
be better.

At our National this year, we will see some of the finest dogs in the
country, not just here or now, but in the entire 99 years of the GSDCA. We will

see the great ones, the not so great ones, and a few that might not be in
the right arena. But, what we will not see is many dogs that do not belong
in the national ring.

I said what is not the problem. I can't say what the problem is, because
I love the breed. While I believe there are problems, in the 40 years I
have done this, I don't see any more, and some less than it used to be.

I love to show and going to the shows. I enjoy the people at the shows, the
dogs I am seeing and the judging that is done there. I get a real kick
out of hearing how much people love the dogs we sell, and how many call or
write to brag about their dogs.

If it ain't broken, don't insist on fixing it.

If you think breeders are breeding bad animals, if you think people
seriously breed litters to produce faults, if you think all judges only judge
to
do favors for their friends, and if you feel the breed is no longer a viable
and valuable dog, then find another sport.

I love this sport, and thank you all every day for letting me be a part of
it.

I will be at the National. I will Blog to say what I am seeing. I am
looking forward to the judging, and don't expect any favors from any judge on
the four dogs I will have entered.

When I vote for the judges for next year, I will remember what I want in
the ring, what they have to offer. If they will or not put me up is not a
factor I ever consider. It is our National. And it is our anniversay.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.
