The high altitude means the red blood cells don't pick up as much oxygen as
they do at lower altitudes--those of us who live here have more red blood cells
comparatively.
For visitors--lots of water and keeping the blood sugar up seem to help. When
I'm climbing up over 13,000 feet I take along "gorp" a combination of peanuts,
M&Ms, and raisons to munch on. That steady supply of sugar keeps the brain
functioning and thus the muscles.
