John,
Events such as this one can not and should not be placed in a public space
until details have been worked out. Each event must have a reliable member
in good standing with some outreach experience acting as a liaison as well.
Otherwise we run the risk of no one showing to the event -- that's pretty
poor form and really bad PR for the SAS. Plus, some groups may not want
their event on a public page because they are private. For
not-for-the-general public events, actually utilizing our email list to
advertise for volunteers would be a better option.
I don't know what this would entail, but we may want to consider setting up
a password protected calendar on the website or via a shared calendar
system like Google. Board members and outreach volunteers (let's call them
"leads") could post things on the calendar. Once someone takes on being a
Lead for a proposed outreach event, it is up to them to work with the
organizers, manage the call for volunteers, and then import it to the
public calendar when appropriate. This isn't the first time I've proposed
something like this, but like most things the board talks about it then
never follows through... I suspect this will only become worse now that the
board is pretty much deciding to move away from actual meetings as well...
I've said my piece on this.
As I offered previously, I will act as point person/Lead for this INLC
event if Debbie and the board don't have reservations. I will contact Dave
on Monday to begin making arrangements and determining a location.

I believe Nick gave everyone active on this thread contributor writes to
Wordpress - it is easy. There is no good excuse NOT to put this out there
IMO. Who knows, if we get a little more organized and promote outreach to
our membership with the calendar we might pickup some people. We need
that.
Note I'm NOT saying push outreach to FB, just to our web site. Although
that is an interesting topic.
Yes, anyone with contributor rights can manage events. We could also have
a practice of adding a "DSN Credit" tag after an event is complete so we
have a way to track that someone remembered to log events there.
Yes, I know there are a few people in our membership that should NOT do
outreach at schools or in any way represent our club. But that is a risk
we have managed down - they are NOT showing up to outreach now where these
events are openly promoted in newsletter and meeting forums.
To summarize my point - we have a very cool little web site which is easy
for anyone to post events. We should use it.

think we should aim for perfectly dark skies or a remote site like Fishtrap
with a group like INLC. Their job is conserving land, ours is a focus on
preserving dark skies. We can combine this by having a party in conjunction
with them on one of their more urban properties, such as at the easement
they secured for Riverside state park or similar. It gives them a chance to
show the benefits of conserved, wild areas near urban areas, and us a
chance to show why the dark skies near urban areas need to be preserved.
An outreach partnership with INLC could be very cool and also prove very
beneficial for astronomy long term in the area.

Yes we would be interested. We tend to have our dark sky star Parties
out at the Fishtrap there is parking out at the trail head. But if you have
land that you would perfer to have a star party at I am sure we could work
with you. I am forwarding this to our board, so they know what is going on.
