The CommonwealthAttorney-General's Department is progressing a review of the
approved formsmade under the Marriage Act 1961 and Marriage Regulations2017.
The review is building onfeedback from stakeholders, including comments
received following thecommencement of marriage equality in December 2017, as
well as previous workundertaken by the department to streamline and modernise
the forms.
Any changes to the Notice ofintended marriage (NOIM) form will impact on other
official marriage forms –specifically the Official Certificate of Marriage, and
the Declaration of NoLegal Impediment to Marriage. These forms will also be
revised when the NOIM isfinalised following the current consultation.

This information isprovided to alert you to the proposed changes in the Notice
of intendedmarriage (NOIM) form being considered by the Commonwealth
Attorney-Generals’Department that will impact on other official marriage forms.
In particular, theseitems are currently collected and transferred onto Official
MarriageCertificates. The proposed changes are removing several items, and
consequentlythey will no longer appear on Official Marriage Certificates.
· Usualoccupation
· Usualplace of residence (full address) of the “Parties (i.e. Bride
andGroom)
· Father’sname in full (If not known, write “unknown”. If deceased, add
“deceased”)
· Mother’smaiden name in full (If not known, write “unknown”. If
deceased,add “deceased”)
· Children by previous marriageor out of wedlock
The removing these items from the Form, means they will no longer appear on
Official Marriage Certificates. The removalof these items will impact Family
History Resources in the future, especiallyfor our grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.

These changes willaffect the future of family historians; The Department
suggests the changeswill streamline and modernise the forms usedby Celebrants.
However the consequences of the loss of this information willmake it harder for
future researchers to understand their family history. Ifyou are concerned with
these proposals Your Future Needs You Now to stopthese changes and voice your

Current marriagecertificates (along with birth and death certificates) are all
covered by theprivacy period (in NSW unless it is an immediate family member)
· Births over 100 years ago
· Deaths over 30 years ago
· Marriages over 50 years ago
Stopping these proposed changes will assistyour children, grandchildren and
great grandchildren in developing and interestfamily history.
It is vitally important for future researchthat the information on Birth,
Marriage and Death Certificates remains as it iscurrently written. The current
process involving these certificates is effective and theinformation collected
is of significant value. The limited benefit of theproposed attempt to
streamline the process for Celebrants needs to bequestioned. There appears to
be little justification to for the proposedchanges; the affected items are
considered to be already covered adequately bycurrent laws for legal and
privacy issues.
Bye for now, Lilian
