Yes, Dawn, that what I plan to do for 3 out of 4 -- my queries were to find out
whether any of the differences in the first, second and fourth dot-points were
important and to draw attention to what the instructions say for those indexers
who may not have looked at them for a while.
I'm not sure I understand what you mean about notices in the 'In Memoriam'
section. The instructions say NEVER index, but I would have thought that a
legitimate death and/or funeral notice that has clearly been placed (presumably
by the newspaper) mistakenly in the 'In Memoriam' section should be indexed
regardless of what the instructions say. Is that what you do?

Lindsay, I would say to all your queries:
Do what it says in the instructions.
You'll find full stops and all those other anomalies because either (a) the
entries were done before the instructions were 'tweaked' or (b) people forget,
and do what they have always done!
WRT the In Memoriam sections having notices which are clearly not relating to a
bygone date, this happens in most papers from time to time, I've found.
Sometimes they can even appear to be for the current year being indexed, but
the wording gives a hint of a typo, also you can check the website to see if
there has been any other notice for the person, indexed.

Subject: [ryerson_index] Minor indexing queries
I've recently started indexing again after a long break, so have been going
through the instructions pretty carefully. That has resulted in some minor
queries:
* birth details -- the instructions say, eg, "late of Sydney, (born 17 Jun 1943
Melbourne)". A location search shows that this date is more commonly indexed as
17JUN1943 or 17 June 1943 than 17 Jun 1943 -- I prefer what is shown in the instructions,
but does it matter?
* using the same example, should there be commas or not before the opening
parenthesis and between the date and place of birth -- and does it matter?
* under Notice Type, the final para says "any notice published under the "In
Memoriam" heading is NOT indexed, under any circumstances" -- even where a death and/or
funeral notice has been mistakenly placed under that heading in the newspaper?
* the penultimate para under the heading Location says "NEVER use full stops.
Use NSW instead of N.S.W., Mt instead of Mt. ..." A location search showed *many
*thousands of entries where the full stops have been left in, perhaps by those who index
exactly what is shown in the notice. Again, does this matter?
Thanks in anticipation.
