Bev,
Exactly what I thought as I read the notice.
John
I would be inclined to regard both the indigenous names as what we call
surnames, in the same manner as some older Javanese sometimes have only one
name.
John – would it be acceptable to index these alternative names in the following
way?
MITAWALINYA, (Mitta)
NGITJUWULUNYA, (Mitta)

Would Wally’s ‘child name’ and ‘adult name’ be forenames or surnames?
Judging by his nickname, they are perhaps forenames – but would Porter have
been his surname then, bearing in mind indigenous customs?
Or should we show them both as ‘nicknames’?
