Bev,

Exactly what I thought as I read the notice.

John

I would be inclined to regard both the indigenous names as what we call surnames, in the same manner as some older Javanese sometimes have only one name.
John – would it be acceptable to index these alternative names in the following way?
MITAWALINYA, (Mitta)
NGITJUWULUNYA, (Mitta)

Subject: [ryerson_index] How to record Wally's other name/s?

Would Wally’s ‘child name’ and ‘adult name’ be forenames or surnames?
Judging by his nickname, they are perhaps forenames – but would Porter have been his surname then, bearing in mind indigenous customs?
Or should we show them both as â€˜nicknames’?
