Hi David
Interesting re Sandra’s descent line J Somehow Sandra doesn’t sound very
Chinese J
Anyhow, your advice and mine both point to the same thing – Ah is not a name!
Sandra one of these days we should get together. My Billy Blue was a negro (my
GGGF on Dad’s side). It intrigues people, as I am very fair (and so was his
wife, by all accounts).
Cheers

Dawn,
Sandra is of Chinese descent so we have an interest in naming . We attended a
seminar hosted by the Chinese Australian History Society many years ago. Most
attendees were bi lingual and were often more fluent in a Chinese language
than they were in English. Speakers at the seminar were from National Archives,
State Archives, NSW State Library Sag etc
The common thread with names was that there was no such name as AH. Ah was
more a way of saying my name is or I am is So if I was trying to make myself
known to a purely Chinese speaker I would say, I am David then try and get the
other person to give their name. I don’t know if it had to be a man who replied
so you might answer I am, or my name is Dawn. (Ah Dawn)So Sandra’s gr
grandfather’s death certificate ( 1932 Surry Hills Sydney) that gives his
father’s name as Ah Tick from Canton is wrong and I doubt that we will ever
solve the mystery. Her recently completed DNA test might give some ideas or
lead us to a lot of Ticks in Canton ( or a lot of Lyme disease sufferers).
David
PS More recently we attended a meeting of the Dead Person Society chaired by
Peter and Pauline Kettle. The main topic was Chinese in Australia. The same
message with naming came out at that meeting.

A lot of people don’t know that Ah means Mr in Chinese. ‘Popular usage’ has
evolved surnames into, e.g. Ah Wong rather than Wong

Dawn
There are 49 SOO entries, 227 YEE entries and 23 WAN entries in Ryerson but no
combination of any two of those. I don’t think we can make assumptions. In true
Chinese naming there are no names with hyphenated names so I didn’t look for
those but then again there are no people in Chinese who have the surname of AH
and we have 29 of those in Ryerson.
I think anything I put in the index for YEE WAN SOO will be largely based on
guess work

On the other hand there are 49 entries in Ryerson with the surname SOO, one of
whom has a first name Yee.
On that basis, it may be SOO, Yee Wan Annie?

I did a quick google search and it appears "YEE WAN" is often a surname.
My guess would be "Soo" is the first name and "Annie" is known as.
YEE WAN, Soo (Annie)
But I may very well be incorrect.
Good luck!

Any suggestions as to what is the surname and what is the given name/ names?
There was no other matching item in the Ryerson Index ( that I could find) nor
was there any further notice in the two following issues in a small weekly
paper.
