How easy will it be to flip NM’s 2nd Congressional District? The Cook Political
Report rates NM - 02 as competitive, but with a Republican advantage, thus
“Lean Republican.”
NM’s Secretary of State’s office lists almost 17,000 more registered Democrats
than Republicans in the district. That tally comes from last February, before
big efforts were made to register voters and before Trump’s approval ratings
began to drop. Now add in all the independent voters (almost 81,000). That’s a
lot of people who could potentially swing the district left.
Historically, many Democrats have voted for Republican candidates in the
southern district. That may not hold this election. Nationally, there has been
an 8 percent increase in the number of voters who say they want Democrats in
control of Congress to act as “a check on Trump” since a year ago.
Getting more local, Valencia County voted for Trump in 2016, but for Obama in
2012. It’s a swing county with swing voters in a swing district in a midterm
with an unpopular President whose poll numbers are dropping.
