Canon specs for the 580EX and EXII say they are
dedicated Canon flash and they give a list of Canon
digital and film cameras compatibles with these
flashes, there are no references in the 580EX
instructions manual about it could be used for other
non Canon cameras with or without TTL, the terminal is
to fit a flash brackett, but it does not change flash
- camera protocols. There are several ways to use these
flashes however with Canon cameras only, at least
according the manual; BTW I could be wrong, but my
experience with dedicated Pentax flashes after to try
them for other cameras using different ways was that
they don't fire, I thought I could use them for the
manual mode using the GN and the subject distance to
obtain the f stop, but they did not fire directly,
perhaps dedicated Canon flashes are different but I
doubt about it.

All the best
