Rick: What is the serial number of your viewing lens? Mine is 819134.----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerry Laderberg" <jerry@xxxxxxxxxxx>

Rick:That's quite interesting. My 2.8A carries serial number 1114165, but the Tessar is number 2,311,236 - 65 examples earlier than yours. So, all the stories about how the assemblers just grabbed parts out of the bins, sat down at a bench and put them together without regard to matching numbers are probably accurate.BTW, the paint on mine was very flakey in the same area above the name so I removed it all ( fingernail, no special tool needed) in preparation for painting & found that it looked pretty good " as is" with a little buffing. Consider that. This is the second 2.8A I've had ( the first was terrible cosmetically, but worked well) and I like the results a lot. These are the 2.8 Tessars the Rollei factory offered to replace free because they were bad ( or is that an urban myth?). I've tried for about 25 years to get one with a replaced Tessar ( Opton, I think) and/ or a Biometar - equipped model ( 2.8B), but without success.Good luck.----- Original Message ----- From: "Rick Oleson" <rick_oleson@xxxxxxxxx>To: <idcc@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, November 19, 2007 10:21 PM Subject: Re: [IDCC] Rolleiflex 2.8A -Hi Jerry: I'll take this opportunity to correct an error in the camera serial number while I'm at it: The camera is serial #1101196, not 1100196. According to what appears to be a detailed listing on www.rolleirepairs.com, the 2.8A began with 1101000 (this is seconded by my 1957 Modern Photography directory, which also mentions the change to MX synch at 1201000) and ended with 1204999. The lens is a T-coated 8cm 1:2,8 Tessar, #2311301. The Lens Vade Mecum says that the batch of Rollei f/2.8 Tessars were numbered between 2300000 and 3000000, so this falls at the beginning of the series, both for the camera and the lens. This number is extremely early: I have a prewar Super Ikonta A with Tessar #2325112, and a ~1950 Contax S with Biotar #3268188, and I had a prewar Automat with Tessar #2493204 .... so the numbers on the 2.8A's certainly seem to be out of sequence. Everything that I have suggests that the numbers should have reached 2500000 before the war and 3000000 by the end of it. rick :)=Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2007 11:17:58 -0500 From: "Jerry Laderberg" <jerry@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [IDCC] Rolleiflex 2.8A - To: "Internet Directory of Camera Collectors" <idcc@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Message-ID: <00d101c82ac7$c5c10940$931d4845@trjq8s3ovxbf2qy> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Rick, what is the serial number on the Tessar?
