I think the metal case is useful for any photographic
activity on the water or close to the water or in the nature in general,.I
had situations with the Rollei in which I would have liked to have the
metal case.
You need to apply a 596.3 % to the 1969 prices to get tthem in 2019
according the US Inflation Calculator. This way, if you payed $479,50 for a
2,8F in 1969, you'd pay $3,338.84 today. You could buy a GX in A or mint
condition in eBay paying $3300 right now or $3850 for a GX Expression
limited edition within the original box;.-.

I think the metal “never ready” case whas really ony useful for work in
the humid tropics, where a leather case would get mouldy quickly. Today
you would probably use a Pelican case or Zarges aluminum box to regularly
dry your electonics with desiccant.
I had my share of experience with mould in the West African tropics, as
did my father who used a Zeiss Ikon Icarex 35S in Ghana from 1970 to 1973,
a camera I later took over and learned to hate until I was able to afford
my first Canon F1...
