I found an interesting brochure from June 1969; it shows Rollei products
sold by Honeywell in the US; page 18 says about the Rollei Metal (Tropical)
Case: "
METAL CASES This sturdy metal case e ncloses the camera for full protection in
severe weather or other adverse conditions. With rubber-sealed closure edge,
this air, dust, and water-tight case floats with the camera inside. It has a
pivoted camera-holding bracket for quickly swinging the camera into shooting
position and internal clips for two rolls of extra film or desiccant
cartridges.
For use with all Rolleis with grooved tripod base plate except Tele
and Wide-Angle
models. Weight without camera is about 23 oz. A desiccant cartridge is
included.
(For Rolle iflex 2.8 above No. 1,260,000; Rolleiflex 3.5 a bove No. 1,267,000;
Rolleicord above No. 1,344,000; and Rolleiflex".

The Rollei Tropical Case for the 6x6 TLR was manufactured from October
1956 up to the middle of 1969 and for the 4x4 from October 1958 up to 1964.
The fireproof glass tube for the silica gel could be also sold separately
as spare part. This metallic case was designed to protect the camera from
extreme weather conditions like those of the tropics or during
water-sports and also from physical mechanical damage; there were some
prototypes shown in Prochnow's Rollei Report II. The 6x6 tropical case
weighs about 700g and the 4x4 about 620g- The number of manufactured units
is unknown.
