I think Carlos is our resident expert on the panorama head and stitching photos.

I've had a panorama head (second model) for some time but haven't used it yet. My understanding, which may well be flawed, is with the 80mm lens there is no overlap using the click stops. With the 75mm there is a slight overlap. Is the overlap enough for photo stitching software?

With my Rolleiwide I guess there would be a sufficient overlap for the stitching software.

Just wondering who has experience in this.

Some time ago I decided to make a panorama of my local park*, 360 degrees. I simply hand-held the camera and used free Irfanview to stitch it all together. Since there were slight differences in elevation angle, as expected, I just trimmed the top and bottom of the end result. (I have Photoshop Elements but never use it because Irfanview meets my needs with much less hassle and study).

The main thing I learned from the experiment was to keep the same exposure from shot to shot.

Now I have "upgraded" from a flip phone to a "smart" phone which has panorama built in. It seems to work but I haven't used an end product and probably never will.

As it turns out Ricoh gave me a free Theta which takes full spherical photos, the only down side being that your hand is in the picture when you hold the camera over your head. There is a solution, somewhat, I can put the camera on a stick and stand behind some natural object, out of view, and trigger the camera with a smart phone.

Now back to Allan's question. If it were me, I would use the pano head just to keep the camera level and ignore the click stops, using at least a 20% overlap. (Irfanview seems to work with less overlap but why not be on the safe side?)

*FYI just use Google Earth and search 3237 Via Marin, La Jolla, CA. The park is across the street North. (I now live 1,200 miles from there so the address is of no consequence to me.)
