In the UK, 17.5% VAT is payable on the margin of used
goods (i.e. sale price minus purchase price).

Cars are somewhat of an oddity - they are taxed at the
point of first use, rather than the point of purchase.
This leads to anomalies in itself - within the EU, you
can buy a car from any member state you choose, and
pay the tax applicable in your home country. In order
to protect dealer networks in each state (to provide
servicing etc), the base pre-tax price thus varies,
and is lower in high ta countries than low tax ones,
in an attempt to keep the post-tax prices comparable.
However, if you live in a (comparatively!) low tax
country, it's then cheaper to buy a car in a high tax
one, and reister it in your own country, thus
benefitting from lower prices and lower taxes. With
cameras, this doesn't apply, as you pay the tax at the
point of purchase.

Oh, and petrol here (we don't have gasoline!) is 83.9
pence per litre of Unleaded - that's $7.32 per
(proper) Imperial gallon, or about $6.10 per US
gallon.
