I have yet to process 2 rolls of B&W taken last week with my 'wide with lens hood, some into the sun. I will let you know if there is any flare...

John

Lens shades do nothing about light from sources in the image or that can hit the lens directly. They act to vignette the field of the lens for exta-image light. Some flare can come from reflections from the internal structure of the lens mount. A properly designed mount should have little reflection but many do. There is also some reflection from the interior of the camera. Rollei began to add light baffles sometime about the mid-1950s. While these reduce the internal flare quite a lot a lens shade is still desirable.
