:Laurence, speaking of half frames, got a Mercury II when I was in HS and you are correct it did save on film cost but I could not afford to develop the 72 pictures.

You sure hit a number of the 25! I just examined a Samuri for sale at

an innovation at that time.

I've got a Samuri, Its kind of cute, and was probably ahead of its time, however I think that the small auto-focus point and shoots really filled its market niche better. Half frame doesn't suit the birthday and Christmas market well as it generally take them about two years to finish a roll. Half frame's heyday was probably in the fifties and sixties when film was expensive in real terms and may serious amateur's had very little cash to play around with. It produced some interesting cameras, such as the Olympus pen reflex, and the first of the modern Konica's where you could switch from half to full frame in the middle of a roll. (I like dropping off a roll of that to a one hour shop, it really confuses their machines.) So I'd agree: The Samuri is interesting, with an opticly ingenius design but not one of the all time greats.

All the best

if one were to carp, those cameras are in some cases rather
wide ranges of models, but nevertheless, my closet (and sometimes
even my camera bag) contains a number of those anointed:

 Leica M6 and other M series cameras (i have M3, M6 & MP)
 Nikon F5 and the F series (F3s)
 Hasselblad 500 Series (500, 503)
 Rolleiflex TLR (2.8F)
 Linhof Super Technika series (ST-IV)

most DUBIOUS entry on the list: Yashica Samurai????
