Ronnie, talk to your Rodgers dealer. They should have fundraising suggestions. Talk to other churches, organists, the AGO...how did they do it? Do some math...if you need to raise $100,000, you need $100 from 1000 people/families. Or $1000 from 100 people/families. Or etc. How many stops on the new organ? Let's say 75..."sell" them at $500 each. How many keys and pedals? It's a three manual, so let's say 3X61=183 plus 32 pedals = 215..."sell" them for $250 each. How many sounds and pitches? 215 keys X 75 stops = over 16,000..."sell" them for $5 each. Put out the word...the new console is "for sale" at $X for major donors, ditto the speaker system, etc. Get a local artist to develop charts, banners, photo montages of stops and keys with donor's names inscribed on them instead of Flute 8'. I went through this once to raise money for a pipe organ restoration/maintenance fund...one person was fascinated by the crescendo pedal...I "sold" it to her...I asked her how much she thought it was worth...she gave it some thought and came up with $1000...I said "Make it $1500 and ya got a deal." Done. At the risk of biting the hand that might like to feed you, I would NOT go looking for a major donor to underwrite the whole thing...the entire congregation needs to get in bed with this, feel ownership, participate in this communion. If you have such a would-be benefactor, you might suggest a matching grant program where they give $1 (or more) for every $1 contributed by the rest of the people. If some people feel the money should better be spent on other things, like outreach, make it a tithing situation...X% of every dollar raised goes to _________ (fill in the blank). Excelsior!
