Rarely do I ever play anything for a postlude that is not a hymn. I believe the people need to leave the church with a melody in their mind that is familiar to them. And many, many times after I finish the postlude, I hear people humming that same tune in the hallways! Some even request that we sing that hymn the next Sunday. I also try to select hymns which we have not sung recently, just to refresh the melody in their minds. Yes, we as organists have a great impact on the congregation.
