I may not understand this discussion. Let me explain, Several years ago, the
church where I was organist decided to purchase a new organ. The dealer was
very frank with me. The church was offered $500 for the old organ as a trade
in.
Or,
The dealer offered to give the organ back to the church or give it to me. The
price was the same with or without a trade in! The dealer wanted to know how
to best package the sale. I explained this to the church. The old organ was
moved to the little chapel. When the organ would no longer play, the church
gave the old organ to a church that had the same model that needed repair. The
term cannibalize was used to describe the process finding old organs for free
to use for parts to keep another old organ in a different church functioning.
Dealers often add whatever the buyer believes that their old organ is worth to
the sale price. Then take the old organ to the wrecking yard if it isn't
playable or worth the cost to repair.
In the question of defective midi units, there is no trade in. That means the
"real" value of the old midi unit is what the buyer is willing to offer, The
old midi unit may only need minor repair. The dealer may want to purchase the
defective unit, repair the unit, and then sell the unit at a price that the
dealer can make the desired profit.
In this case, the midi unit is out of warranty. New parts are no longer
available from the factory. Some dealers will pay for the unit if the unit
doesn't require much repair. Some dealers will accept defective units with no
money changing hands. Other dealers may require a fee to get rid of the
defective unit.
I don't believe there is a one size fits all. Some people become very rich
taking old merchandise, repairing, it and then selling it for a profit. Other
people will go bankrupt.
I can't see Rodgers or any other manufacturer of organs having an official
policy for dealers to follow when defective merchandise that is out of warranty
becomes available to the dealer.
In this case, a defective midi unit is worth what Noel and the owner of the
midi unit agree that it is worth. Or there is no deal!
