Dear Parents, Teachers & Citizens, who are supportive of teachers & their passion for meaningful, progressive, authentic education reform, At 2:00 pm, on Wednesday, July 30th, the Alliance for Quality Education, Metro Justice and the Coalition for Justice in Education will be holding a Press Conference in the front of School Without Walls on 480 Broadway, in Rochester, for the purpose of demonstrating support for teacher tenure and due process, while opposing the goals of the upcoming lawsuit that seeks the elimination of teacher tenure. We strongly support fair, viable, research-based improvements to the teacher evaluation system, as well as effective, research-based, professional development practices; but not at the expense of teacher tenure and due process. Certainly there are some ineffective teachers who should not be teaching; just as there are in the attorney, medical, police, government and corporate professions. However, we believe that this law-suit is not addressing the most critical issues for public education: inequitable funding and resources, the impact of concentrated poverty and high-stakes, standardized testing and imposed curriculum that takes the joy out of classrooms. Please support our teachers by attending this press conference, if possible. We especially need supportive parents to attend. If you can attend & would like to give a 1-2 minute speech, please let me know. (We may not be able, however, to meet all requests.) If you do not wish to speak, just standing behind the speakers would be an important sign of support. Hope to see you at the press conference. Sincerely, Dan Drmacich, Chairman Coalition for Justice in Education
