I also own the Asus EEE PC 1000HE, and am also very satisfied with it. I used it for about 3 weeks before increasing to 2gb RAM, and I can say I particularly noticed a difference in file transfer operations. I use Window-Eyes and Firefox, as well as OCR products with no problems. Typing is very possible with my hands, which are big enough to palm a basketball. -----Original Message----- From: real-eyes-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:real-eyes-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Jim Ellsworth Sent: Friday, September 18, 2009 8:05 PM To: real-eyes@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [real-eyes] Re: net book computer Hi Erika, All of the netbooks I know of have keyboards of varying size depending on the overall size of the device. If you want a nice size keyboard I would choose one of the 10.1 or 10.2 inch screen models. I own an Asus Eee PC 1000HE which has a keyboard about 93% the size of a standard laptop keyboard but the way they shape the keys now it is very easy to type on. There is of course no numpad. There are of course smaller models with 8.9 inch screens but the keyboards are also somewhat smaller. I chose mine for the following reasons and I've had it since the spring and it is very nice. Battery life is rated to be as high as 9.5 hours and I would say without really trying I get over 8 hours on average. I leave WiFi on most of the time but only turn bluetooth on when I need it. There is a webcam which I never use so it stays off. When I got the machine I immediately took out the 1 GB RAM chip and put in a 2 GB chip to give it a little more speed though from what I've seen even with 1 GB it does quite well. When I bought my netbook I spent months looking around at different models and reading lots of reviews and even considered regular notebooks which were much higher priced though in the price range of the notebooks a lot more powerful as well. I went with the netbook for size, weight and I still get pretty good performance. I use JAWS on it and don't have any trouble at all. I've ran JAWS 10 and now the public beta of JAWS 11 on it nicely. I put Office 2003 on it and use it regularly especially Outlook 2003. I also use Internet Explorer 8.0 on it as well. There is a newer model of the unit called the Asus Eee PC 1005HA. If you get it with the 6 cell battery like mine it is rated with a battery life of up to 10.5 hours and it is slightly lighter than my 1000HE. If you are not wanting get a machine with lots of power able to run many many programs at once a netbook should do fine. I plan to put Windows 7 on mine once it is released. Anyway, if you have any questions let me know and I'll try to help out. Thanks, Jim -----Original Message----- From: real-eyes-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:real-eyes-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Erika Wolf Sent: Friday, September 18, 2009 5:37 PM To: Real-Eyes Subject: [real-eyes] net book computer HI, everyone on list: Does anyone know anything about the new Net book Computer? Is it compatible with any of the familiar screen reading programs, and does anyone happen to know whether or not the Net book has a touch screen or whether there's a keyboard that can be accessed by those whom are unable to use touch screens? Thanks, for any insightful input.
