Hi,
I got my bar code scanner today and have to say I absolutely love this script
that has been written for the upcoming version of Window Eyes 7.0.

I purchased a Metrologic MK3780-71A38 Omni Directional scanner from Barcode
Planet on July 5 and it was delivered on July 11.

It was easy to get out of the box, figured out how to plug the cable into the
barcode scanner and a USB connection was on the other end of the cable. I
plugged it into my laptop and Windows Xp recognized it right away. There
wasn't any software or anything to install with the scanner. I had already
downloaded and installed the very small script that makes all of this happen.
I pressed the hotkey to bring up the script, pointed the scanner at a jar,
pressed the scan button on the barcode scanner, and here['s what it said:

Jif Creamy Peanut Butter
40 oz (1.13 kg)

It took about 2 seconds at the most after the barcode scanner beeped,
indicating that it found a bar code.

I've done the same with a box of sugar free jello pudding vanilla flavor, a jar
of Pace in the fridge, a box we just received today that had one of our new
cordless phone extensions in it, and much more.

The scanner was right around $225 with shipping and well worth the investment.

A follow up to an idea Reggie had, this could easily be done on a windows smart
phone running mobile speak. The script for Window Eyes goes out to a web site
submits the bar code and returns the results. In my search for a bar code
scanner I did find a version of the same ne I bought that is Bluetooth.
