I am using avast and love it. I know there's many people out there that
don't like it because its not as accessible as other programs but it has
worked better than nod32 for me. I used to have nod32 and was using it on a
friend's computer we were cleaning up. It had several worms and viruses and
one nod32 just couldn't get rid of.
I tried avast on this friend's computer and it found and removed the worm on
the first try.

Some things I like about avast other than it being free is it plays a
recording of a synthesized voice letting you know it has just been updated.
If a virus is found it plays a warning sound and lets you know with another
synthesized message that a virus was found.
Avast will ask you if you want to restart the computer. It does this so
avast can load in dos and attack the virus or worm that way without windows
files running that can make it more difficult to remove a virus because some
files are currently running.
When it is done it restarts windows without any interaction from the user.

I've found the most accessible way to do a manual scan is to do that from
within my computer and scan each drive on its own. The screen avast
provides is a bit more accessible that way. You can find the percentage and
what file it is currently scanning.

Avast like other anti virus programs runs in the background constantly
monitoring for any suspicious activity.

Some people out there may not like avast but it works for me.
