Hi all, With the recent discussions of electronic notetakers on the list, I thought I'd share this post I received from the ATIA conference currently happening in Florida. ATIA is the Assistive Technology Industries Association. The conference is a chance for the different companies involved in A T to show their newest products and provide information. <snip> More news from the ATIA conference... The next item that caught my attention was the PACmate series of accessible PocketPC devices from Freedom Scientific, specifically the BX and QX series. The BX series features a Perkins-style keyboard, the QX series features a standard QWERTY-style keyboard, and both systems use the JAWS screen reader to provide audio information to the user. The devices use the Pocket-PC OS and will run a variety of third-party applications, and they feature a modular design that allows the user to easily add third-party hardware such as scanners or wireless LAN cards. You can also quickly and easily add a portable refreshable Braille display in seconds with no tools or cables- they just click into the unit and you?re ready to go. You can connect each of the units to another computer via USB, which allows you to operate the device with your desktop or laptop computer and access all of the features and configuration settings of the unit through a visual interface. The PACmates feature Intel Xscale 400MHz processors, and come with 64 MB RAM and 32 MB Flash ROM. Connectivity capabilities include: 2 CompactFlash Type II ports, IrDA 115 KB/second infrared port, and USB type Mini A/B (2.0 compliant). Also included in the units are a voice recorder and a speaker and microphone. The units are built to work with the PBD refreshable Braille displays sold by Freedom Scientific (of course), which are available in 20 or 40 cell configurations, and feature many more controls such as dual cursor router buttons, 10 dual-purpose shortcut keys and a ?Whiz Wheel? for quick navigation by line, sentence, or paragraph.
