MoPix Update from WGBH- December 4 HOLIDAY SEASON UPON US... THREE ACCESSIBLE MOVIES BOW THIS WEEK Alvin and the Chipmunks from Twentieth Century Fox Films (cc dvs) (rated PG) The tiny trio makes their live action debut in this family comedy about the pint-sized pop stars. With the help of CGI, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore come to life, causing mischief for their human guardian, Dave Seville (Jason Lee of My Name is Earl). I Am Legend from Warner Bros. Pictures (cc dvs) (rated PG-13) Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable... and manmade. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City... and maybe the world. But he is not alone. He is surrounded by "the Infected"- victims of the plague who have mutated into carnivorous beings who can only exist in the dark and who will devour or infect anyone or anything in their path. The Kite Runner from Paramount Vantage* (cc only) An epic tale of fathers and sons, of friendship and betrayal, that takes us from the final days of Afghanistan's monarchy to the atrocities of the Taliban reign. This unforgettable story of redemption is based on the best selling phenomena The Kite Runner. ANOTHER SCHROEDER ADVOCACY SUCCESS (LET'S CALL IT SAS FOR SHORT) Last week brought the news that D.C.-based advocates Paul and Lori Schroeder helped convince Disney/Buena Vista to supply an audio description track for National Treasure: Book of Secrets, which debuts on Dec. 21. That film had previously only been slated to be released with closed captions. This week, the Schroeders managed to convince The Weinstein Co. to describe a film for the first time. As a result, The Great Debaters, directed by and starring Denzel Washington (and just nominated for a Golden Globe for best drama), will open on Christmas day with both captions and descriptions. Thanks Paul and Lori, and thanks to The Weinstein Co! Paul continues to blog about these efforts (as well as other important things such as greater access to medication labels and other non Hollywood-type efforts) at the American Foundation for the Blind's blog: http://www.afb.org/blog/ NEW MOPIX SYSTEMS DEBUT THIS WEEK IN ATLANTA AND CHICAGO! Some of these titles will also be available with descriptions. The latter will be designated "description" vs. DVS in our Updates to indicate availability of that feature, though WGBH did not create those descriptions. -- CREDITS Closed captioning and description of films provided by the Media Access Group at WGBH, a nonprofit division of Boston public broadcaster WGBH.
