These trains shows I did on LI, Joel the organizer, always had a short piece of
rail, maybe 6", at the event and that was quite heavy. You know that rail comes
in a number of weights, as in pounds per yard? I believe mainline rail is 130
lbs/yard. I read that NYC Subway uses 100 lbs/yard.

I finished that book "Modern Freight Cars". I got a second book "Freight Cars
of the '40s and '50s. The amount of info was amazing. I am never going to see
my cars the same way. I am now noticing details I never noticed before.

When I was growing up in Roanoke, we had a houseboat on Smith Mountain Lake. We
had four 1' sections of rail that served as our anchors. If my memory serves me
correctly, these things weighed about 50# a piece.

If you’ve ever held or been close to a piece of rail, it seems pretty rigid.
That train must have 50 rails on it. I think it would be very difficult to
model. When I lived on Long Island there was a secondary line (same one used by
Ringling Brothers) where these trains were parked.

That's pretty cool. Last winter there was a train carrying welded rail around
Horseshoe Curve in PA. I didn't see a saved video of that train on YouTube.

Thanks for sharing. Now for the $64 question. How would we model that? Can you
get 48" Trizzlers?

I've wondered how continuous welded rail trains get around curves. Looks like
rail is flexible.
