Yes, only on braille displays of course, nobody would emboss 8 dot braille.
Dot 7 is usually an upper case indicator, very handy, and many displays
allow you to set which video atributes are indicated by dot 8.
It can lead to a little confusion with the "cursor" indicator.

The trick with 0x and using lowered letters for digits does sound like
a fairly elegant solution even if it's non-standard, especially since
it trivially expands to bases up to 36.
Though the mention of 8-dot Braille does make me curious: do dots 7
and 8 see much use outside of acting as an insertion pointer?
