Is the schema stable enough that using something like Jasper's ireport or the Pentaho report designer would be a reasonable approach for more complicated things? If you aren't familiar with them, they are java interactive GUI layout tools that connect to most data sources to design reports that can subsequently be generated in various formats (html/pdf/excel, etc.) with the corresponding web server.
