That's right - clearance for the drivetrain was the only reason.

Make an incision in the inner wall of the right 40x10 tube, 17.2 cm from the
FWaP. Make a second incision 10 cm from the FWaP in the left tube. Remove the
fixing rod. Bend both ends inwards until there is only 8 mm space left between
the tire and the tubes. Tack weld both ends together. Connect the two ends with
two triangular 1.5 mm thick plates and one rectangular sized plate. Leave 2 cm
of space between the plate and the tire.
