(voor the non dutch connesseurs: Dennis defines wheel flop as the reason for which riding the bike in a straight line is impossible).Hoi Dennis, Dank je voor je info.
My old flevo has because of its geometry (positive trail) an enourmous wheel flop tendency. This is compensated by a rubber spring builtin at the pivot, which effectively acts as a self centering device.
When I was on vacation some years ago, the rubber block ripped, I had remove the block and continue riding without it. I found to my suprise that the handling of the flevo was actually better! It was easier/faster to go into curves because I didn't have to fight the rubber block. Riding in a straight line was no problem either. The only real problem was when I stopped at crossroads and forgot about the missing block: when I took my feet of the pedals the front part of the flevo slammed into the ground pedal/chainring first - ouch !
I have a different view on what the wheel flop is than you have (it is a subtile difference, but makes it measurable). It is the tendency for the python/flevo not to stretch out (uitstrekken zoals je zei) when taking place on the python. This happens when steering the bike a little off balance, the self centering upward force is smaller then the weight pushing the front part down.
I would advice to always make the self centering as little as possible. Just enough to balance out the flopping tendency. That way the self centering does not interfere with steering, and still accidents won't happen so easily when you loose contact with the pedals.
groetjes, Dirk
From:* nerdie <nerdie.spam@xxxxxxxxx> *To:* python@xxxxxxxxxxxxx *Sent:* Tuesday, February 19, 2008 5:18 PM *Subject:* [python] Re: Wheel flop I got one question: Does anybody knows the dutch meaning of the term "wheel flop"?
