If smileys really are that effective in supporting written language it surprises me they have not yet entered literature.

Actually, they were developed as a shorthand form during the days of 300bit-per-second modems at online costs that were sometimes several $$ a minute. For eg.: <gd+rvvf> means: "grinning, ducking and running very very fast" to millions of old time compuserve users.
