In the old AGFA MCC110 and 111 the color change was heavily dependant on the developer I found that prints developed in Ethol LPD diluted 1+10 or higher produced very rich purplish blacks; while prints in more concentrated LPD had a very subtle change of color

Developer certainly has a strong effect on the effect produced by a toner. In general, toners are affected by the structure of the silver crystals that make up the image. The original image color is mostly due to the size of the crystals, the smaller they are the more the color tends towards yellow. Extremely finely devided silver, often called colloidal silver, is bright yellow and is used as the yellow filter layer in Kodachrome and probably other color films. Partly, the effect of a toner is due to the ratio of volume to surface area of the crystal, the ratio becomes larger as the grain becomes smaller. Bromide in the developer can affect the image color, usually the more bromide the finer the crystals and the more yellow the color. However, Ira Current, of Ansco, found that very large amounts of bromide added to the developer would _cool_ the tone given by bleach and redevelop Sepia toner, its described in his patent USP 2,607,686. Its also true that the emulsion has a strong effect on the color produced by a toner, for instance, the polysulfide toners (like Kodak Brown Toner) now recommended for protection of microfilm images will produce a sepia color on most printing paper but results in a blue shift on microfilm which has a very fine grain structure.
