I used the terms "traditional" and "silver rich" for lack of any other way of naming these films. Whether they actually have a high silver content is something else entirely. That modern emulsions are harder and less prone to scratching is certainly a plus. But the Forte, Foma and other films have their advantages even though they must be handled more carefully. Rather than ignoring modern technology perhaps the intent is to retain their unique characteristics. I personally do not like the *look* of tabular grain films any more than I like the *look* of digital images. I do not consider grain to be a dirty word. Probably more than tabular grain emulsions because tabular grains have better covering power than other shapes. However, the hardness of the emulsion has nothing to do with its silver content. Rather, it is an indication that the manufacturers are ignoring decades of improvements in emulsion making technology. Modern emulsions use different hardening agents than those of sixty or seventy years ago and also often contain synthetic polymers that make them much less vulnerable to swelling from pH or heat. To say something like this is no compliment to the films mentioned. Rather it indicates a throw back to the days of poorer technology. --- Richard Knoppow Los Angeles, CA, USA dickburk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ================================================================================ ============================= To unsubscribe from this list, go to www.freelists.org and logon to your account (the same e-mail address and password you set-up when you subscribed,) and unsubscribe from there. ============================================================================================================= To unsubscribe from this list, go to www.freelists.org and logon to your account (the same e-mail address and password you set-up when you subscribed,) and unsubscribe from there.
