Is there a digital photography list? I have a question about the Epson 4990 scanner and scanning big negatives on it.

In case it's ok to ask that question here: I looked at one of these scanners today. It seems that when you scan an 8x10 negative or transparency, the film sits right on the glass. I would think that that could cause newton rings or focus problems. The holders for other sizes of film hold the film about 1mm away from the glass. I read somewhere on the internet that the focus for this scanner is sort of between 0 (on the glass) and 1mm (in the holders). So I wonder if you can tell in the prints that the focus is not spot on. Maybe this doesn't matter.

But what about the newton rings?

I have a Canon 9950F which I use to scan 8x10 film. To solve the Newton's rings problem, I bought a 8.5x12 inch piece of anti-glare glass from a frame shop. This glass has a fine texture very similar to anti-Newton glass, although the framing glass is significantly cheaper. I then taped a few pieces of film in each corner of the glass to act as feet that raise the negative off of the glass platen of the scanner. To scan, I tape the edges of the 8x10 negative to the glass "negative carrier", which I place on the glass platen of the scanner. This has eliminated my Newton's rings problems, and I haven't seen any loss of scan quality, but then I'm not making huge enlargements.

Hope this helps.
