But only because I find brown glass bottles more easily available. I think
you're right, the need for "brown" is only for photo reactive materials.
Interestingly, Kodak used to ship things that were decidedly not photo
reactive in brown bottles. I recall Photo Flo 200 in little brown glass
bottles on the shelf.
Some materials actually surprised me. Perma Wash left in its original
plastic bottle will eventually deteriorate in a nicely malodorous way,
but seems not to in glass.
I do keep working solutions for things like fixer and toner in the
gallon jugs supplied for distilled water. These are never kept that
long and are disposed of regularly in my darkroom.
I've personally never used the marbles trick and experienced no downsides.
For example, I have a batch of Pyrocat-HD I mixed up in March this year
in 500ml bottles that are now about 1/2 empty. I've seen no loss of
developer function.
