1/4" border all the way around, but there is a 1" white border to either side of the image area that isn't covered by anything. I thought I would see some fog there, but I don't. Which prompted me to ask whether paper that has already received strong exposure is more prone to darken (from the stray enlarger light at burn intervals) than an area which has received very little exposure.

Aren't the borders covered by the easel blade when burning? I think if you lay a mask down on the print during your burning you will have a very definite mark left. I really don't like burning in when I print. I will often opt to dodge everything else instead, or at least dodge in such a way that the needed burn becomes a broader area.

Hello all,

Was working on a print last night. I really liked my first take, but wanted to burn in an area, which I did only to find that I darkened the overall image too. I notice a lot of stray light during the burn, because I can see it in contrast to my mask. Could that be the source of the overall increase in exposure? I'm guessing yes, and I will try to address it with light absorbent panels around the enlarger. But my question is, wouldn't I see in the borders as fog? Or is the paper more prone to fogging in the already sensitized area? Is it normal to adjust for this, but cutting back the initial exposure? Should I be laying down masks over the image not to be burned?

I'm using Ilford MG IV RC Pearl, 8x10 sheet in easel masking 1/4" border, image area is 7x7 centered. Exposure 26 seconds, burn in 27.5 seconds.

Thanks,

Elias
