DEAR DON,
Well said. We must remember that a photo that creates a feeling of
discomfort is not necessarily bad. The precedent of an affectionate photo
of someone on the throne was established by Lartigue when he photographed
his new bride, Bibi, on "the throne" the first morning of their honeymoon.
It is embarrassingly intimate and affectionate...and that is exactly what
makes it so amazing and memorable.

Of course, this is different in many ways from the photo in the
essay but the motivation is love, perhaps of different kinds, in both
photos.
                CHEERS!
                        BOB

Hi David

It would be natural to regard some of those photos exploitative or
demeaning. But don't you find that analysis is ruled out by the context -
specially the words, and the overwhelming message of affection and respect
that the full series conveys. The only unfortunate photo I thought was dad
"on the throne", although the image itself was reasonably discreet, and it
was probably just the text that made me wince.

The photo essay informed us about the best of his life and his
relationships. They were still part of the man as he declined; they were
not to be found only in some old photos from his youth. What the essay
teaches us is that even at our weakest time, our spirit and our dignity
remain evident to people who look at us fondly. So long as we have them
there is nothing to fear, and nothing to hide away.

Don Sweet
