if the 4x5 pmk neg was developed according to testing for graded paper around
grade 2 then it would look muddy on VC paper with no filter anyway. Sandwiching
a grade 4 or 5 filter should bring it back.

if it was developed according to testing for VC paper then the light source
probably has too much yellow in it.

for controlling brightness then some LEE neutral density lighting filters of
density 0.1 should control that. You just add additional layers of filter to
get to where you want to be. the lighting filter sheets are cheap (not
optically perfect) and come in big sheets which are simple to cut to size.

Ilford MG filters can also be had in big sheets but are pricey. (30x30cm sheet
is approx 30 gbp for one sheet. rip off Britain strikes again)
