Adrienne;

Ryuji speaks about Sistan here:

http://www.apug.org/forums/forum37/23823-rc-paper-how-unarchival-8.html#post287392

You're already using selenium, and FB, and the problem Ctein "cured"
with Sistan is, IIRC, most seen in some RC papers. Again, IIRC, Dave
Valvo spoke to that on this list.

Given that, why use Sistan? If you don't like the color of your paper
in selenium toned to completion, try a different developer first.
Dektol, LPD and Cold-72 all produce different results with selenium
toning. Also, some papers show little color shift, like Ilford MGIV.

The added benefit is that you can discontinue your search on e**y for
vintage VW wiper blades. ;-)

Subject: [pure-silver] Sistan and Senior Moments

| I was about finished drafting a reply (long and with many snipped
excerpts,
| of course!!), when I accidentally closed the window I was working in!
| Danged digital........can't we just have a 1,200-way phone conference
about
| all this stuff??!! So here's the Reader's Digest version:
|
| Turns out I wasn't squeegeeing the prints (despite advice to the
contrary
| back in 2005--the archives don't lie)! I have just added this to my
| darkroom reference notebook so I will not forget again! I'm certain
these
| dripping wet prints face down on the screens must be the cause. I
can't
| compare it to any other prints because I dry everything else face up.
Due
| to time and space constraints I batch-process: print a bunch of
prints;
| wash; dry. Then I "batch" selenium/wash/Sistan. It is only the last
step
| where I dry face down to avoid pooling of sistan in the wavy
depressions of
| the prints.
|
| The reason I don't dry FB face down in the first step is because it's
a
| major PITA to clean my screens so I don't do it as often as I should;
my
| ribbed-bottom sink, too narrow for the screens anyway, prevents laying
down
| & scrubbing which I would prefer to do, so I use the very smelly Edwal
Tray
| Rack & Tank Cleaner, let sit, and rinse thoroughly.
|
| What concerns me now is Richard's post (excerpted) about the lack of
| protection afforded by dilute KRST (which research I couldn't find on
the
| IPI website, I would've loved to read it!):
|
| > > Very dilute solutions of Kodak Rapid Selenium Toner do

|
| I am strongly partial to cold-tone prints (this is AHT, after all!!),
so
| short of using Ilford papers exclusively I'm not sure how to approach
this
| one, because I don't know whether Sistan alone is sufficient to afford
| protection (relevant excerpt below):

|
| Trading old problems for new, and enormously grateful, as always, for
all
| the help and advice!
