Thanks Richard and everyone answered my question :) This is a really nice and informative list. I was mumbling about the following questions: 1) Whats the advantage in diluting xtol instead of using the stock? 2) Given the stock time, there is a way to calculate the "diluted time"? 3) Any suggestion from your personal experience? 4) Last but not least, using a normal (non tmax) fixer, I must increase the fixing time? Thanks to all & best regards Antonio Kodak has charts showing the effect of 1:1 dilution on time. For most developers the effect of diluting 1:1 is to increase developing time about 1.4 times. This is not quite consistent because there are effects from both the film and developer. Also, there is an effect called induction time, this is the time between applying the developer to the film and the first appearance of the image. It will vary with several factors but the practical effect is that there is no absolute way of knowing the effect of dilution on a particular combination of developer and film. Agitation also makes a difference. The main effect of diluting Xtol or D-76 1:1 is to extend development time. For some films the full strength developer is too fast for consistent results. When diluted more than 1:1 other effects begin to take place such as loss of maximum density due to local exhaustion. For push processing these two developers should probably be used full strength. T-Max and Delta films have more silver iodide in them than most other films so take longer to fix. Ammonium thiosulfate fixer (rapid fixer) is less affected by the iodide but complete fixation will take place with conventional sodium thiosulfate fixers if the time is extended. Most conventional films will fix out in about five minutes in conventional fixer although the time is usually extended to twice this. T-Max takes a full ten minutes to fix out. I use a two bath system and fix for six or seven minutes in each bath. Tests for residual silver show none. The conventional test for fixing time is to fix a scrap of the film and see how long it takes to "clear". That is the time until the film appears to be clear other than for the support tint on 35mm film, which is permanent. Fixing should continue for about twice the clearing time. However, its also useful to test for residual silver. The simplest test is to use Kodak Rapid Selenium Toner diluted 1:9. Place a drop of this on the well washed film and allow it to stand for about two minutes, Then rinse off and look for any staining. There should be no stain visible. -- Richard Knoppow Los Angeles, CA, USA dickburk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ============================================================================ ================================= To unsubscribe from this list, go to www.freelists.org and logon to your account (the same e-mail address and password you set-up when you subscribed,) and unsubscribe from there. -- Io utilizzo la versione gratuita di SPAMfighter.
