The slight purple or pinkish color in T-Max is residual sensitizing dye. It
tends to bind on the gelatin. Its completely removed by sulfite wash aid in
normal treatment and washing.
Anti-halation dye, applied to the back of the support, is removed by the
sulfite in both developer and fixing baths. Actually, it is decolored rather
than being removed. Old film suffering from vinegar syndrome, that is, the
decomposition of some safety base, can have the anti-halation dye recolorized.
Anti-light-piping pigment is not used on roll or sheet film.
Note that some color films have a dye layer applied under the emulsion to
serve as both anti-light-piping and anti-halation. This dye is removed during
the bleaching step in both negative and reversal films.
