DEAR DANA,
Great story & pix! Who knows, maybe the lens was used by
Eisenstein's cinematographer to shoot "Battleship Potemkin"!
Though better equipment is more efficient and produces better
technical quality, I will never forget the ad campaign by Yashica for its
Electro 35, a point and shoot 35mm camera with auto exposure. They had Hiro
shoot fashion at night under streetlights...the results were stunning!
Contrary to what they wanted their ad to say, I deduced that you could give
someone as visually creative and technically amazing as Hiro a coke bottle
stuck on one end of a shoe box with a Polaroid back on the other and he
could make an amazing image. It always has been and always will be the
artist who sees/conceives the great image and uses his/her craft to the best
of their abilities to create the amazing object of art. Again, agreed that
better tools make for more efficient craftwork and technically perfect
results but, as mentioned in the article, sometimes one can use the "limits"
or "defects" in a tool to produce more interesting results. Pinhole and
Holga photos are perfect examples.
                CHEERS!
                                BOB

[If you're easily offended, there is a mention of a non-film camera in the
article, but that's really beside the point]

"But aside from the great pictures, and the wonderful story of the
mysterious Russian, we can learn something from this tale.
Camera-tech comes and goes, but photography is really just about light.
That's why you should buy the best lenses you can afford.
They will probably last longer than you."
