The filters that go under the lens are more stable since they are not
subjected to the same level of heat that the dichroic filters are.  If you
use PC filters that go in a drawer above the lens it is best to have a heat
absorber in the system.  Even those don't get the same level of heat as do
the dichroics.  How often to change?  Best test your system every 5 years.
Generally when you work with certain products day after day you know what
you can do with them.  If something changes or you can't get the contrast
you used to get.....  test your system.
