Dry Down. yes. sorry about the misnomer.

Tim, I'm not sure it's just about illumination. There's something happening with the paper, maybe close to what Dennis is saying. I keep a 60 Watt bulb in the darkroom for viewing, and I never get too close to it. My prints always dry darker. They look perfect wet : )

Is the dry back effect of fiber prints something to do with how a sheet look wet vs. dry, or is there more to it than that? Is there a chemical process ongoing until the sheet is fully dry?

Do you mean dry down affect? I don't notice it as much with the modern papers I use compared to the old Agfa Portriga or Ektalure I used to use. I was of the opinion that it is due to the swollen gelatin when wet allowing more light through. I guess this forum
isn't really for opinions.. just facts
Sorry Dennis

I've never seen a definitive answer to what causes drydown but its pretty apparent on some papers. Part of the effect is just from a sort of filling in of coarse grain surfaces but I've seen a slight amount on even glossy paper. The effect is to lower contrast and Dmax. I don't think there is a way of compensating for it, you just have to learn what to look for when printing. Drydown can be reversed to some degree by waxing or lacqering prints. There is also an odd effect with some RC papers where drying it under IR light causes an increase in Dmax. This was confirmed to me by Dave Valvo. If Dave is still following this list he can probably supply better explanations than I.
