I personally didn't have a problem with scratches, but I had enough curl in the film I did that way that it didn't move around that much either. Now the light tightness of the pipe is another issue.  With thin wall pvc, I would strongly suspect it might be a problem.  IIRC I used a schedule 40 4 inch pipe that was quite thick.  100% light tight?  Honestly don't know but it was far better than any other option I had at the time.  For short durations in room light vs intense bright sunlight, I might have gotten some fog that I didn't detect. It worked for me, but I also learned one thing along time ago too.  Luck counts.  I might have just been lucky rather than good. lol

The only thing is that I am unclear whether all PVC pipe is actually
light tight. Also sloshing film around inside a closed pipe could
scratch it. It would be my instinct, therefore, to make three such
pipes, open at the top, and simply lift the film from solution to
solution in the dark.
