Well I might have just figured this thing out.  The screw blocking the front standard from going back appears to be a stop.  Why they would put one there without a way to release it is beyond me, but mine is not to question why.  It is only on the right side of the camera.  It appears to be threaded into something cast, which makes me believe its factory and not something someone added later.

Does this mean the front standard must be removed from the rail on the bed and manually inserted on to the track inside the base as a part of normal operation?  IF that is the case, the camera is fine.  IF not would there be a down side to working with the limitation other that its a pain in the neck.  Pain in the neck it might be, but it also might be livable.

Still find it hard to believe the old timers did news with these things.

Thanks in advance

The stop on the front rails is there so that when the door is closed the front rails will clear the fixed rail in the camera body. The front standard must be moved from the fixed rail to the front rails on opening (unless you are using a 65 Super Angulon which will work with manual focusing from the fixed rail. Before closing the door the front standard must be moved to the fixed rail and slid all the way back and the front rails must be dialed all the way back to clear the top of the case.
