DEAR JONATHAN,
Here are some definitions (curious choice of words!) of acutance.
1) "A measure of the sharpness with which a film can reproduce the edge of
an object" (Dictionary.com)
2) The measure of lens performance or of picture quality, in terms of the
sharpness of the transition across the boundary between the images of light
and dark areas. (Photographic Optics; Cox)
I have much more sophisticated definitions in Neblette and Mees &
James but the above cover it.
******For an excellent example please see the following link.
        http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/sharpness.htm
Scroll down (about mid page) to the close up images of the man's
sweater. The images clearly show the difference between resolution (ability
to reproduce fine detail) and acutance (perceived sharpness, often due to
edge effects).
Soooooooooooooo, as mentioned, although the T-max 100 35mm negs I
have processed with other developers held lots of fine detail, there was an
overall lack of sharpness.
                CHEERS!
                        BOB

Bob, In what context are you using the word soft?

DEAR HTH,
Did the T-max 100 in Pyrocat at least have good acutance? Or HD
(high definition) as Sandy calls it? Though it seems there is often a trade
off between grain and acutance, can you recommend a high acutance developer
that doesn't produce too much grain with T-max 100? I find that, with my
Leica and Leitz lens that perform VERY well with other film/developer
combinations, though 35 mm T-max 100 is fine grain and yields fine detail it
simply looks soft.
                CHEERS!
                        BOB

1:1:100, 15 min. 72deg. F in a 16 or 32 oz.SS tank. This printed well
on VC paper with a #2 MG filter so all further were using this time,
temp., dil. ISO 100.

Agitation for all was 30 sec. initial, 10 sec. every 2 min. thereafter.
Good negs but grainier than others and no other benefit.

I thought I remember reading that Mr. King developed this formula for
negs that could be printed in either silver or pt./pd. Again TMX 100
(the old stuff) 135 & 120
