I think the book answer is probably a very helpful "it depends"!
 
If you are not doing anything at the time and you have no reason to think
the unit is still doing some data transfer from say a backup or edit, then
probably nothing will happen.  However, if the unit is still working on an
operation of this kind, you may well lose data.
 
If in doubt, you are best to shut down and this ensures that all data
transfers are complete before the shut down is finished.
 
9 times out of 10 you'd be OK but it's the other 1 time that you need to
worry about!! (Smile)
