Hi All
Another great read is *Make it Stick: the Science of Successful Learning*
by Brown, Roediger and McDaniel. A very interesting read. Brown is a writer
and novelist, Roediger is a Cognitive Psychologist and Professor, and
McDaniel is the Director of the Center for Integrative Research in
Cognition, Learning, and Education. The story teller does a great job of
bringing learning concepts to life with everyday stories. Fun read ....
however, it also provides lots of learning, and therefore teaching
strategies, that help students link concepts, build structures, and retain
material. I have found this particularly helpful when meeting with a
struggling student.
I have also been looking at a website called The Learning Scientist @
http://www.learningscientists.org/ It has some great resources including
book recommendations, podcasts, and frequent blog posts.

At CSM I went to the Education and Pedagogy Consortium meeting and Sara
Maher (chair) had purchased a book for E&P Consortium members titled "Small
Teaching" by James M. Lang (Jossey-Bass publisher). We had a brief
discussion related to the book in the meeting and I put it on my "plan to
read" list. I read through it during my travels last week and dog-eared
about 30 pages of great teaching ideas that I will refer to as I prepare to
teach my upcoming course.
I recommend it to anyone who is interested in making some small changes
in a lecture/class session that are grounded in learning science & theory
to help students learn. What appealed to me were the small, and
reasonable, changes that make a difference - instead of doing something
like a complete class overhaul.
